Differential Service: What It Is and When Your Vehicle Needs It

The differential is one of the hardest-working and most overlooked parts of any vehicle. Every time you drive, its gears transfer engine power to the wheels while allowing them to spin at different speeds through corners. That constant metal-on-metal contact depends entirely on a thin film of gear oil, and unlike engine oil, differential fluid almost never gets checked during a standard service. When the oil breaks down or leaks out, the gears and bearings wear rapidly, and a routine fluid change becomes a costly rebuild.

How often should the fluid be changed?

For most daily-driven passenger vehicles, differential fluid should be replaced every 48,000 to 96,000 km, depending on the manufacturer. Towing, hauling, or frequent stop-and-go driving in Fraser Valley traffic puts extra heat through the gears and shortens that interval considerably. Trucks used for towing are especially susceptible: their rear differentials run hot for long stretches, cooking the additives out of the oil long before the odometer suggests it.

Warning signs to watch for

A low or contaminated differential usually announces itself. Listen for a humming or whining that rises with road speed, feel for a shudder on tight low-speed turns, and check for dark oil seeping around the differential housing or axle seals. Fluid spots on your driveway under the middle of the vehicle are a classic axle-seal leak and should be inspected quickly, because gear oil left unaddressed will destroy bearings and gear teeth within weeks.

What a professional service includes

A proper differential service is more than draining fluid. Our technicians inspect the housing and axle seals for leaks, check the condition of the drained oil for metal particles, verify the fluid level and spec for your vehicle, and top up or replace with the correct gear oil grade. Catching a leak at this stage typically costs a fraction of a bearing or gear replacement, which is why we include a drivetrain check with every service visit.
